Google Business Profile Products & Services: be specific to rank for more searches

Generic categories miss searches. Specific listings find customers looking for exactly what you offer.

Google Business Profile's Products and Services section is where you tell Google (and customers) exactly what you sell or offer. A plumber lists drain cleaning, water heater repair, and emergency service. A salon lists haircuts, color, extensions, and nail services. A restaurant lists dine-in, takeout, and delivery.

This section matters because: (1) it makes your listing more relevant for specific search queries, (2) it feeds into Google's understanding of your business, and (3) it helps customers find you for the exact service they need, not just your general category.

Why product/service clarity moves rank

When someone searches "haircut near me" vs. "hair extensions near me," Google uses your Products and Services section to decide if you're a match. If you list both, you rank for both. If you only list "Hair Services" as a generic category, Google guesses—and might not include you for extensions searches.

More specificity = more relevance = better rank for the searches that matter to your business.

How to add products and services

On your Google Business Profile:

  1. Go to Products or Services (depending on your business type)
  2. Click Add product or Add service
  3. Fill in: name, category, description, photo (optional but recommended), and price (optional)
  4. Publish

Keep descriptions short and specific. "Interior house painting" is better than "we paint." "Dental implant consultation" is better than "dental work."

Pricing: show it or don't

Adding prices can help customers filter (people looking for $50 haircuts will skip the $150 blow-out) but also limits you. If your pricing fluctuates by season or customer, leave it blank. If you're confident, add it—it reduces tire-kicking calls.

Example: Oil Change — $45–65 (by vehicle type). Roof Inspection — Free. Corporate Event Catering — Custom quote.

Photos for products and services

Add a photo if you can. A picture of a finished haircut is more powerful than the word "haircut." A photo of your pizza is more compelling than a menu item listing. Not required, but it lifts click-through rate significantly.

Common mistakes to avoid

Don't list too broadly. "Services" as one item is useless. "Dog grooming, dog training, dog boarding, pet supplies" is useful.

Don't keyword stuff. "Emergency plumbing repair service near Chicago" as a service name is spammy. "Emergency Plumbing" is clearer and more trustworthy.

Don't duplicate with your main category. If your main category is "Pizza Restaurant," you don't need "Pizza" as a service. Add specific services like "Dine-In," "Takeout," "Delivery," "Catering," "Private Events."

Don't forget to update seasonal services. If you offer snow removal only in winter, remove it in June. If you offer holiday catering only in December, add it in October.

How many to list?

Most businesses list 5–15 products or services. A dentist might list 20 (cleanings, whitening, fillings, root canals, implants, orthodontics, etc.). A single-service business (portrait photographer) might list 1–3. There's no hard limit, but keep it realistic.

If your list starts to feel like a novel, you're probably too detailed. Consolidate related items.

Monitoring and updates

Check your Products/Services section quarterly. Remove services you no longer offer (especially if you're seasonal). Add new ones. Update pricing if it changes significantly.

This is one area where freshness matters to Google's algorithm. An up-to-date Products/Services section signals an actively maintained listing.

Link this to your GBP strategy

Your main category tells Google "what you are." Your services tell Google "what you do." Together, they define your relevance for local searches. A clear Products/Services section alone won't rank you—but a vague one will hold you back.

Spend 30 minutes listing your actual offerings, add photos where you can, and you'll see clicks increase from more targeted searchers.
